Take the Steps to Become Heart Healthy

DECATUR, Ill. — According to the Centers for Disease Control, “heart disease remains a leading cause of death for adults in the United States.”  Learn how to improve heart health and reduce the risk of heart disease at free community programs presented by University of Illinois Extension.

Heart Smart Eating will be offered at these locations:

March 4 | 10:30 a.m. | Atwood-Hammond Public Library, 123 N. Main St., Atwood

March 7 | 10 a.m. | Kirby Medical Center, 1000 Medical Center Dr., Monticello

March 19 | 10:30 a.m. | Hope Welty Public Library, 100 S. Madison St, Cerro Gordo

Participants will explore the impact of sodium, fat, added sugar, and fiber on heart health and learn practical skills to make heart-healthy food choices, from grocery shopping to meal planning.

“Small changes add up to get blood cholesterol and blood pressure numbers in a healthy range, says Nutrition and Wellness Educator Caitlin Mellendorf. “The class will raise your knowledge and skills to make more informed heart-healthy food choices.”

All classes are free. However, participants planning to attend the Atwood program are asked to register by March 3 at go.illinois.edu/AtwoodHeart; if planning to attend the program at Kirby Medical Center, register by March 5 at go.illinois.edu/KMCHeart, or if planning to attend at Hope Welty, call the library at 217-763-5001 by March 17.

University of Illinois Extension provides equal opportunities in programs and employment. If you need a reasonable accommodation to participate, please call 217-877-6042. Early requests are strongly encouraged to allow sufficient time for meeting your access needs.
